Making a Tool Post for the BIG Lathe! | Part 1 | Shop made Tools ek iş 2022

How much material did we remove off this piece of plate to make our new tool post!? In this video we are making a standard style 4-position tool post for our big lathe. When we got the lathe it gave us quite a few dramas (that we finally sorted) but we have never been happy with the “quick change” tool holder that is on it. So it’s time to make a new one, which gave Kurtis a few dramas as along the way! To make this tool post we are using a piece of 210mm square bis alloy 80 grade high tensile plate. We show the step by step process including facing, drilling and boring in the lathe before a lot of processes on the milling machine. We need to face down all the sides, mill all the slots for the tools, drill and tap 12 bolt holes before drilling and countersinking a hole for the locking dowel pin. Even after all that work this new tool post is not completed so keep your eye out for part 2!

Beautiful! Reminds me when I was a teenager working a summer job in a pattern shop when my dad worked on the wood side. I made hold down clamps on a Bridgeport mill. The shop made casting patterns and match plates for the Michigan auto industry. My experiences are the reason I have an affinity and appreciation for your channel. Now I’m 76 and creating drone cinematography, giving me appreciation for your video work as well.
I don’t know much about modern art but that tool post has to be in the top 10% of it. PS I loved the quiet “ooh… shiny!” from Karen
@27:30 How do you rate that straightness? Is it pretty straight, bloody straight, absolutely straight, or completely farken straight? Always keen to matchup terminology with skills on display (I dream of emulating you on a small DIY scale lol) !!!

That surface finish looks amazing, I don’t know if is the stock, or the machining speed(s). But seemed very mirror like without extra work. Completely get the need to coat to stop it going rusty though.

Morning Kurtis, if the cap head bolts came from a Chinese or Eastern machine, I normally find they are loose in American or European threads? I know you probably have, but have you tried some American metric bolts and are they still loose?. Will nitriding the block tighten the threads up?

Hi kurt , I noticed quite a bit of vibration when milling the first slot in your new tool post , possibly caused by the job not being rigid enough in the vice as it was quite high up from the jaws , also have you ever replaced quill bearing as something still sounds loose and rattling after you replaced all the head bearings, this may have caused your tool breakage problem! Anyway great Video as always 👍 keep them coming!
How do you level and align a new lathe. Must be most intricate to be precise in your work
